2012 CMA Awards: Official Predictions

The 46th Annual CMA Awards have finally arrived! Tonight all of country music’s biggest superstars will unite under the roof of Nashville’s Bridgestone Arena to honor some of the year’s finest. For the fifth year in a row the night will be hosted by superstars Brad Paisley and Carrie Underwood. With performances by Eric Church, Miranda Lambert, Jason Aldean, and Luke Bryan, it’ll be difficult to remember that the night is actually about the awards being handed out. Like every year prior to this, ATC is making official predictions as to who will walk away winners tonight.

Heading into tonight’s big event, Eric Church is the leading nominee with five nominations. It’ll be a crime if the new superstar doesn’t walk away with at least one, but which one could that be? My predictions for each category are below…who do you think will walk away with a coveted crystal trophy tonight? Feel free to sound off in the comments!

Entertainer of the Year

  • Jason Aldean
  • Kenny Chesney
  • Brad Paisley
  • Blake Shelton
  • Taylor Swift

Should win: Jason Aldean; the superstar has continued to have one of the best years in country music with a sold out tour and huge album sales.

Will Win: Taylor Swift; it’ll be hard to dethrone the global superstar seeing as she had one of the highest grossing country tours

Male Vocalist of the Year

  • Jason Aldean
  • Luke Bryan
  • Eric Church
  • Blake Shelton
  • Keith Urban

Should Win: Jason Aldean; a streak of number one hits and a huge selling album with his latest Night Train should give him the momentum to pull off the win

Will Win: Jason Aldean; I believe the singer will finally breakthrough in this category, which he should have done last year

Female Vocalist of the Year

  • Kelly Clarkson
  • Miranda Lambert
  • Martina McBride
  • Taylor Swift
  • Carrie Underwood

Should Win: Carrie Underwood; the blonde powerhouse saw a rise back to the top of the country world with her platinum selling album Blown Away and three number one singles

Will Win: Miranda Lambert; the CMA’s have a love affair with this Texas starlet that will propel her to a third straight vocalist win

New Artist of the Year

  • Lee Brice
  • Brantley Gilbert
  • Hunter Hayes
  • Love and Theft
  • Thompson Square

Should Win: Thompson Square; the duo shot out of the gates with a number one smash hit and followed it up with two more top 15 singles this year

Will Win: Lee Brice; the newcomer has a bit of momentum thanks to a couple number one hits and a new album released this year that I think he’ll take the win in a rather competitive category

Vocal Group of the Year

  • Eli Young Band
  • Lady Antebellum
  • Little Big Town
  • The Band Perry
  • Zac Brown Band

Should Win: Little Big Town; if this group is ever going to win this award, then this is the year for them to do it! They have a lot of momentum coming into the night with their wildly popular summer smash hit, “Pontoon,” and their critically acclaimed new album Tornado. With the nominations showing a trend of change, maybe it’s time for LBT to dethrone Lady A.

Will Win: Lady Antebellum; the current super-group of country music will most likely walk away the winner here. They have continued to release high charting singles and their album, Own the Night, won a Grammy earlier this year.

Vocal Duo of the Year

  • Big & Rich
  • Love and Theft
  • Sugarland
  • The Civil Wars
  • Thompson Square

Should Win: The Civil Wars; in terms of the quality of music and musical work then there is no competition as The Civil Wars have been one of the best kept secrets in the folk/country world

Will Win: Thompson Square; after winning the ACM earlier this year and not getting the chance to make an acceptance speech on air, the duo will finally get that chance tonight as they end Sugarland’s run

Album of the Year

  • Chief – Eric Church
  • Four the Record – Miranda Lambert
  • Home – Dierks Bentley
  • Own the Night – Lady Antebellum
  • Tailgates and Tanlines – Luke Bryan

Should Win: Chief; I said earlier that Eric Church deserves at least one award tonight and I think it should be here. His album is one of the best I’ve heard in years with its unique production, stellar lyrics, and fantastic vocals that is far superior than the other four albums present.

Will Win: Chief; after being overlooked by the Grammys and ACM’s…the album will finally gain recognition tonight with a CMA win

Single of the Year

  • “Dirt Road Anthem” – Jason Aldean
  • “God Gave Me You” – Blake Shelton
  • “Home” – Dierks Bentley
  • “Pontoon” – Little Big Town
  • “Springsteen” – Eric Church

Should Win: “Pontoon” – Little Big Town; Single of the Year is all about chart and sales success. I don’t think any single made more of an impact this year than the LBT number one hit.

Will Win: “Pontoon” – Little Big Town; this category is no stranger to upsets and I believe tonight the quartet will finally be recognized by their peers in this category

Song of the Year

  • “Even If It Breaks Your Heart” – Eli Young Band (written by Will Hoge and Eric Pasley)
  • “God Gave Me You” – Blake Shelton (written by Dave Barnes)
  • “Home” – Dierks Bentley (written by Dan Wilson, Bret Beavers, and Dierks Bentley)
  • “Over You” – Miranda Lambert (written by Miranda Lambert and Blake Shelton)
  • “Springsteen” – Eric Church (written by Eric Church, Ryan Tyndell, and Jeff Hyde)

Should Win: “Springsteen” – Eric Church; this is one of the most well written songs in the category and will most likely walk away the winner

Will Win: “Springsteen” – Eric Church; it’ll be hard to ignore this song and voters will most definitely award the songwriters of this fantastic song
