Thompson Square, “Glass”

After delivering one of the most played songs of 2011, the husband and wife duo known as Thompson Square are hoping to start 2012 off right by adding another smash hit to their evolving resume. Is the ballad “Glass” the next smash hit for the duo or will it be the first major flop of the new year?

I’ve always been a big fan of songs use creative and challenging metaphors. “Glass” is one of those songs. It is a little hard to decipher at first, but once the meaning is understood, it simply becomes an incredible lyric. Songwriter’s Ross Copperman and Jon Nite deliver one of the most unique love songs we’ve heard in country music. On the surface, the lyrics offer a somewhat cheesy look into the possible outcomes of a new relationship.

“We may shine, we may shatter, we may be picking up the pieces here on after, we are fragile, we are human, we are shaped by the light we let through us, but we break fast, ’cause we are glass”

However, dive deeper into the lyrics and you’ll find yourself realizing a deeper meaning. Not only does it describe the risk/reward factor of entering a new relationship, but it also shines light on the fact that, in order to find love, we need to let down any guards or walls we may have. The song’s beginning verse brilliantly delivers the message with a simple metaphor: “Trying to live and love, with a heart that can be broke, is like trying to see the light with eyes that can’t be opened…” By simply getting past the guards and the walls, we could be led the person we were meant to be with all along.

This is the first single from the duo that finds Shawna taking the vocal lead, and she delivers an incredible performance. She pours every ounce of soul and emotion from within her tiny frame into this song and shows off an incredible voice we haven’t heard from previous singles. From the tender delivery of the verses to the power notes she hits during the chorus and song’s bridge, every single note that comes from her mouth is simply stellar.

After scoring a number one hit followed by a top 10 smash last year, I wouldn’t be surprised to see this powerful song shoot straight to the top of the charts as well. I’ve always thought of Thompson Square as duo who could be a game-changer in country music, meaning they have the best chance of knocking Sugarland off their pedestal. I wouldn’t be surprised if, come this April, there’s a new ACM Vocal Duo of the Year winner.
