Single Review: David Nail, "Turning Home"

After scoring his first top 10 single with his hit “Red Light,” David Nail is hoping to back up that success with the follow up single, “Turning Home.” Can the new single have the same impact at radio as the previous hit?

The song, written by Kenny Chesney and Scooter Carusoe, finds Nail finding ways to remember his hometown, no matter where he is. Whether its from billboard lights reminding him of his old high school days or remembering when he first tasted love after a school dance.

The production is filled with plenty of keyboard melodies and a strong pop ballad beat. Nail tries to show off his higher vocal range during the song but falls flat as the production all but drowns him out in some parts. The southern soul he was able to show off on “Red Light” is all but gone on this song as he seems a bit disconnected from the song and more concerned on trying to hit the higher notes.

I’d like to see David Nail become one of the staples in country music, but he’s going to have to be more consistent with his song choices. If he can figure that out, then I think he has the recipe for success in country music.
