2010 ACM Nominations

The nominations for the 2010 Academy of Country Music Awards were announced this morning. Which artist lead the field with seven nominations? Find out after the jump!

Leading this year’s pack is country group Lady Antebellum who scored seven nominations. Close behind them with six nominations are Miranda Lambert and Carrie Underwood while Taylor Swift scored 5 nominations. We’ll take a look at the full list of nominees and discuss each category and reveal the early favorites for the show.

Entertainer of the Year
Kenny Chesney
Toby Keith
Brad Paisley
George Strait
Taylor Swift
Carrie Underwood
Keith Urban
Zac Brown Band

In a bit of a surprise, the ACM decided to expand this category from five to eight nominees. The category includes last year’s winner, Carrie Underwood, and two first time nominees in Taylor Swift and the Zac Brown Band. I’m a bit surprised that if they were going to include the Zac Brown Band then why not Lady Antebellum, who have had a bigger year? This award will be fan voted so look towards Swift or Underwood to win.

Top Male Vocalist of the Year
Kenny Chesney
Brad Paisley
Darius Rucker
George Strait
Keith Urban

No surprises here. This is the same lineup the CMA’s deemed deserving last fall at their awards show. Look for Brad Paisley to be crowned the winner.

Top Female Vocalist of the Year
Miranda Lambert
Reba McEntire
Taylor Swift
Carrie Underwood
Lee Ann Womack

It’s not a surprise that the ACM’s left staple Martina McBride off the list since she hasn’t done much in the past few years. I’m looking at Taylor Swift or Carrie Underwood to score the win, but don’t count out ACM favorite, Miranda Lambert.

Top Vocal Group of the Year
Lady Antebellum
Little Big Town
Randy Rogers Band
Rascal Flatts
Zac Brown Band

In a bit of a surprise, the Randy Rogers Band squeezed into the race beating out newcomers Gloriana and Love and Theft. Since they scored seven total nominations and are the reigning CMA Vocal Group of the Year, look at Lady Antebellum to win.

Top Vocal Duo of the Year
Brooks & Dunn
Joey + Rory
Montgomery Gentry
Steel Magnolia

Finally, a duo category filled with duos that have actually had some succcess in the past year! Newcomers Steel Magnolia are first time nominees in this category while Joey + Rory are enjoying their second nomination. This is Sugarland’s category to lose, but in an effort to send Brooks & Dunn off into the sunset right, the ACM’s may give it to them instead.

Top New Solo Vocalist of the Year
Luke Bryan
Jamey Johnson
Chris Young

This year’s crop are all second time nominees in this category so it’s their last chance to take home the award. Since it’s fan voted, it’s a toss up between Chris Young and Luke Bryan.

Top New Vocal Duo of the Year
Joey + Rory
Steel Magnolia

The only returning nominee in this category is Joey + Rory while the other two are enjoying their first ACM nominations. Again, this is fan voted so I think it’ll be Steel Magnolia for the win.

Top New Vocal Group of the Year
Eli Young Band
The Lost Trailers

Gloriana, Gloriana, Gloriana. ‘Nuff said. They pulled off a HUGE upset at the AMA’s by beating Lady Gaga for Breakthrough Artist, which was a fan voted award. Look for them to win this award and go on to win the overall New Artist Award.

Album of the Year
American Saturday Night – Brad Paisley
Lady Antebellum – Lady Antebellum
Play On – Carrie Underwood
Revolution – Miranda Lambert
The Foundation – Zac Brown Band

This is a great lineup with fantastic albums, although I’m surprised Lady A’s debut was nominated and not their sophomore disc, Need You Now. This is a tough one to call because any of these albums has a chance at winning. If I had to pick one, it’d be Miranda Lambert’s album considering it was well reviewed by everyone.

Single Record of the Year
“Need You Now” – Lady Antebellum
“People Are Crazy” – Billy Currington
“Red Light” – David Nail
“Toes” – Zac Brown Band
“White Liar” – Miranda Lambert

In a shocker, newcomer David Nail received his first ACM nomination of his growing career with his hit “Red Light.” I was expecting either Carrie Underwood or Taylor Swift to have snuck in with one of their hits. But this one comes down to the smash hits “Need You Now” and “White Liar” which were two of the most played songs in the past year. I’ll be happy with either of those two songs winning.

Song of the Year
“Cowboy Casanova” – Carrie Underwood
“Need You Now” – Lady Antebellum
“People Are Crazy” – Billy Currington
“White Liar” – Miranda Lambert
“You Belong with Me” – Taylor Swift

A weird category, if you ask me, that’s filled with some of the most average songs lyrically. However, the two strongest songs are the Lady A smash and Lambert’s “White Liar.” I’m thinking Lady Antebellum will squeeze out the win.

Video of the Year
“Boots On” – Randy Houser
“Need You Now” – Lady Antebellum
“Welcome to the Future” – Brad Paisley
“White Liar” – Miranda Lambert
“You Belong With Me” – Taylor Swift

This is a great lineup of videos that includes Paisley’s video which was left off of the CMA ballot. If I had to pick a winner, it’d be among Lady Antebellum, Swift, Lambert, and the Paisley videos.

Vocal Event of the Year
“Hillbilly Bone” – Blake Shelton featuring Trace Adkins
“Honky Tonk Stomp” – Brooks & Dunn featuring Billy Gibbons
“I Told You So” – Carrie Underwood featuring Randy Travis
“I’m Alive” – Kenny Chesney with Dave Matthews
“Seeing Stars” – Jack Ingram featuring Patty Griffin

If I was going to predict the nominees, I would’ve only gotten two right with the Underwood/Travis and Chesney/Matthews songs. The others are all surprises to me but its nice to see the Ingram/Griffin tune nab a nomination. Look to Underwood and Travis to claim victory here.

The awards show airs Sunday April 18 on CBC and will be hosted once again by Reba McEntire.
